Creating a Replication

    To create an XDCR replication, use the POST /controller/createReplication HTTP method and URI.

    Description

    Data replication occurs from a source bucket to a target bucket. Once a replication is defined, it automatically begins.

    The Full Admin, Cluster Admin, or XDCR Admin role is required.

    The type value must be xmem; which is sometimes referred to as Version 2, and corresponds to the Memcached Binary protocol, used in XDCR communications.

    The replicationType value is always continuous. This value must be specified.

    If the optional parameters collectionsExplicitMapping, colMappingRules, and collectionsMigrationMode are all unspecified, replication occurs between the specified fromBucket and toBucket according to whatever implicit mappings can be determined at bucket-level: that is, if a collection in the source bucket has the same keyspace as a collection in the target bucket (i.e., the name of a collection and the name of the scope within which it is located form the identical scope-name.collection-name pattern, on both source and target), data is replicated between those collections; with the optional application of a filter expression. At a minimum, this ensures that data is replicated between the default collections.

    The collectionsExplicitMapping parameter, whose default value is false, can be specified with a value of true, to switch on replication based on explicit mapping: this means that implicit mapping at bucket-level does not occur. Instead, replication occurs between collections determined by the mapping rules provided in the JSON document that is the value of colMappingRules.

    The collectionsMigrationMode parameter, whose default value is false, can be specified with a value of true, to switch on migration mode. This ensures that documents from the default collection of the source bucket are replicated to the collection determined by the mapping rules provided in the JSON document that is the value of colMappingRules. Optionally, a filter expression may also be provided in this JSON document.

    If the collectionsExplicitMapping parameter is specified, the collectionsMigrationMode parameter cannot be specified; and vice versa.

    The value of compressionType, which determines whether data is replicated in compressed form, can be either Auto or None:

    • If Auto is specified, data compression is provided during replication, provided that the target cluster is running Couchbase Server 5.5 or later. If the target cluster is not running Couchbase Server 5.5 or later, data compression is not provided during replication. (Note that the consequences of specifying Auto as the value of compressionType are thereby determined irrespective of whether the data resides in the source bucket in compressed or uncompressed form.)

    • If None is specified, data compression is not provided during replication if the target cluster is not running Couchbase Server 5.5 or later. If the target cluster is running Couchbase Server 5.5 or later:

      • If the data resides in the source bucket in uncompressed form, data compression is not provided.

      • If the data resides in the source bucket in compressed form, data compression is provided.

    The optional filterExpression is matched against the ids, field-names, values, and extended attributes of documents in the source bucket. Each document that produces a successful match is replicated; other documents are not replicated. Only one filter can be applied per replication; and, once applied, affects all mappings.     The filterDeletion and filterExpiration flags indicate whether mutations corresponding respectively to the deletion and expiration of documents on the source cluster should be either filtered out of the replication to the target cluster, or allowed to remain in. For each flag, a value of true means that the mutation is filtered out, ensuring that it is not replicated to the target cluster; while a value of false (the default) means that the mutation is not filtered out, ensuring that it is replicated to the target cluster. The default value for both flags is false.

    The filterBypassExpiry flag indicates whether a document’s TTL should be replicated with the document or not. A value of true means that the TTL is removed from the document. The default value is false.

    The filterSkipRestream flag indicates whether the replication should be either restarted or allowed to continue without restarting, following modification of the value of filterExpression. A value of true means that the replication should be allowed to continue without restarting. A value of false (the default) means that the replication should be restarted.     The filterBinary flag specifies whether binary documents should be replicated. The value can be true or false (the default). If the value is true, binary documents are not replicated, regardless of whether a filterExpression is applied. If the value is false:

    • The behavior is identical to that of all Couchbase-Server versions prior to 7.2.1 (with the exception of 7.1.5), where the filterBinary flag did not exist.

    • If a filter expression is not provided, binary documents are replicated.

    • If a filter expression is provided, and the expression refers only to either the document’s key, or its xattr, or to both, the expression is applied, and the document is replicated if the expression permits.

    • If a filter expression is provided, and the expression refers only to the document’s body, the document is replicated.

    • If a filter expression is provided, and the expression refers to the document’s key, or its xattr, or to both; and also refers to the document’s body; the document is not replicated (regardless of whether the key or xattr might appear to permit replication).

    The priority flag controls resource-allocation to the replication. The value can be High, Medium, or Low. The default value is High. For information, see XDCR Priority.

    Responses

    If successful, the command returns 200 OK, and an object containing an id for the new replication: this can be used, when appropriate, to delete the replication.

    Failure to authenticate returns 401 Unauthorized. A URI featuring an incorrect hostname or port returns a failure to connect message. Referencing an unknown source bucket returns 400 Bad Request, and an object referencing the unknown bucket-name. For example:

    Examples

    The following examples show how replication can be defined to use either implicit or explicit mappings; and how migration mode can be employed.

    Implicit Mapping

    To replicate data according to the implicit mapping of scopes and collections withing the source bucket travel-sample and the target bucket ts, enter the following:

    The id returned in the document can be used to delete the replication, when appropriate.

    Explicit Mapping

    The following example demonstrates creation of a new replication from the source cluster 10.144.210.101 to the target cluster 10.144.210.102; specifying the explicit mapping of the source collection airline to the target collection MyAirline:

    Note that the collectionsExplicitMapping flag has been specified, with a value of true. The value of colMappingRules is a JSON object whose key is the source collection, and whose target is the target collection. If the call is successful, the following output is displayed:

    Migration Mode

    The following example migrates to the target collection California.SanFrancisco, within the target bucket beerSampleByLocation, all documents from the source bucket beer-sample whose city value is "San Francisco":

    The collectionsMigrationMode flag is specified, with a value of true. Note the format required for the specifying of colMappingRules: the regular expression "city=\"San Francisco\" is provided as the key of a key-value pair, whose value is the destination collection, "California.SanFrancisco". (Note also that, in cases where all data from the source bucket is to be migrated, and no regular expression is therefore required, the key of the key-value pair should be specified as the keyspace of the default bucket: i.e. "_default._default".)

    If the command is successful, output containing the id of the replication is displayed:
